Ely and St Ives

ADULT/SENIOR £27   CHILD £16 - LONG DAY (NORTH)

Rising above the Cambridgeshire Fens, Ely is the destination city with something for everyone. As the second smallest city in England, it is compact enough to explore on foot, but large enough to fill a full day and more. Close to Cambridge and Newmarket and within easy reach of the Suffolk and North Norfolk coast, Ely is your perfect base for exploring this beautiful area.

From the monastic buildings of the city past, the vibrant food scene and the scenic majesty of the Riverside, Ely packs a great deal into a pocket city. With Ely Cathedral, independent shops around the city centre, places to relax and replenish both body and mind, there has never been a better time to enjoy this jewel in the heart of East Cambridgeshire.

Ely and St Ives

St Ives is a delightful little market town with a picturesque riverside setting. The wide main street is lined with many attractive buildings and the old Quay, alongside the river, has several handsome oldy-worldy properties. One of the finest of these is an Jacobean manor house (circa 1600), with superb brick chimneys. The market square (Market Hill), has a good variety of shops, from national chains to small specialist outlets.

Did you know.... The Perpendicular All Saints Church in St Ives has a modern spire, built after an aircraft crashed into the old one. St. Ives Fair dates from 1116. It was held on the feast day of St. Etheldreda, the founder of what is now Ely Cathedral. Goods sold at the fair became more and more shoddy, and came to be described as “St. Audrey”, and eventually “tawdry”.

Oliver Cromwell lived for five years in St. Ives. There is a statue of him on Market Hill. There is a mediaeval chapel on the bridge, one of only three remaining in England.,
